Nice sentence choice! Your sentence doesn't parallel your original sentence choice though.
The adverb clause is different than your interpretation. You used a adverb clause that matches a present continuous and tells how long the rain was falling down. However, the original adverb clause tells "why". It explains why the place was deserted. Your new sentence explains how long the rain had been falling down. Totally different.
